Hi. Can someone recommend a good home security system?

So far, I have only called Vivint but they are rather expensive - $79.99 / month plus the installation fee of 199. Not sure if there is anything better out there.

Thanks.

I have ADT. They're very reliable and responsive. I don't know the installation cost on an existing home.

1. ADT or ADT pulse - I have pulse which gives you a ton of rip-off options including motion detectors, connected fire alarms, smoke alarms, night vision motion sensing cameras, auto door locks, auto on off light switches, video keypads, anti glass break, window sensors, a cell phone app with dial feature and an appliance on/off operator that works with your tvs as well. Anyways this service locks you into a 3 year contract at about $50 and up depending on how many features you have. The rip off is the 3 year contract and the fact that anything that you need will cost you up to $150 and up. You can buy some of this stuff online so I would search around the net if your thinking about using this.

2. Time warner cable now offers a home security system that is comparative to ADT, that may not be a good thing.

3. Vivint offers more stuff but you have to sign a 4 or 5 year contract and the monthly prices are the same

4. simply safe, this'll be what I think I am going to sign up with if they offer in my neck of the woods. They offer a package of products that they will sell to you, but they do not have all the bells and whistles of the others. It is $15 a month and it does not require a contract whatsoever.

I am sure you already know, but by doing so you lower your home insurance bill, good luck

Someone will put some type of gun as security but everyone does not want to go down that path.

ADT pulse is the solution for existing homes, it is wireless.

So no land line is needed?
That's one reason I never had one installed - haven 't had a land line for about 10 years now.
But I have a sign on my front window that says "These premises protected by Smith & Wesson". :)

Mac - Mr. Colt and Mr. Taurus is not going to do anything for me if I am out of the area or if I don't hear anything. I am loaded though.

Dave, my ADT works off a cellular signal (not my cell phone, a separate unit they install) since I don't have a land line.

What do you guys think about the security system that can be bought at Sam's. I have seen systems that are about 500 to 1K. Just buy the equipment and that's it.

I have a home security system from D&G. It's pretty solid. If anyone is ever poking around, my Dogs start going crazy and I grab a Gun. Yea-D&G works out really well for me. :D

We got ADT in February, with Pulse which allows you to control the system from your phone. We had an existing system, so most of the wires were already installed when we built.

If you have USAA, you can get a discount and you are only locked in for two years instead of three.

Simply Safe seemed like a good deal because of the low monthly fee, but the hardware required for every door and window will cost you more than a multi year contract.

ADT was the best I found when I was looking.

It depends on the number of doors and windows you have, in the house I grew up in I think it would be a great alternative to ADT, I have USAA and I have a three year contract, there goes the Christmas card to my so called ADT hook up.

The problem with this system is you're banking on technology not advancing in the next three years to make this system obsolete by then. Those system are not connected to an environment, meaning the only people that will be alerted to your home being invaded when you're not home is the burglar. No police will be called but you may catch them on the video as the more expensive ones are motion activated and some are slick enough to send you a text, so you might be on to something in hindsight, lol.

It also depends on which monitoring you want. For the $14.99 per month, all you get with Simplisafe is alarm monitoring and a cellular connection. If you want email and text alerts, it will cost you 24.90 per month.

The largest hardware package comes with only four entry sensors and costs $539.85. If you want additional sensors, they cost $14.99 each.

So 539.85 plus $24.90 per month over two years comes to $1137.45. I pay $35.00 per month for ADT, which comes to $840 over two years and all windows and doors have sensors.

Over three years, Simplisafe total is $1,436 and ADT is $1,260.

I think I had a $99 installation fee.

I'm sure these are cheaper than any alarm system and if you're not home when they are activated you might have a bit of a mess to clean up when you get home. The East Germans allegedly had things like these placed along the border.

I had that system. Unfortunately, it did not work well when I was away in Houston and my house burned down. I had the G with me but the D is now pushing up daisies in my yard.

I have seen offers touting free installation. Perhaps they will do so again.

If anyone is hurt or killed by one of these, regardless of the motive of the victim, the person who installed such a device will be tried and most likely be held liable for the injury and could face lengthy imprisonment in the case of death.

I hope D'II isn't serious about most of the things he proposes, but Ludwig is correct. It's not legal to boobytrap premises even to prevent trespassers.

In addition to my monitored home security system, I have dogs and guns too, plus a gate with a code lock. Your first defense is common sense, though. A friend who lives even farther out into east Cedarwhackerville than I do left her car at my place when she and I went somewhere recently. I locked up and set the alarm system as we left, and she remarked that they don't lock their door at home.

It won't take but one incident to change her mind.

Nextalarm.com just discovered it and this might be a better option then the other systems I suggested as it works with existing units.

Cheaper service and it operates off Voip and you cell phone. A lot of existing or new installs work off of a landline or charge $300 in order to install the cell service. Lastly and maybe the most important is there's no contract!!!!!!! I hate contracts with everything I love as a consumer, Dish/direct ties me into a two or three year contract with the latest and greatest invention and pricing offers only to run you over to get to the new customer three months later as your prices rise and the equipment you got becomes quickly outdated. Same thing occurs with cell phone companies and consumers are duped into those contracts as well, did you know that you can purchase a samsung galaxy at full price ($599) and use it at cricket paying $40 dollars a month sell your phone a year later on ebay for $350, buy the latest samsung or Iphone again for $599 and still pay a considerable amount less over the course of 2 years then you would have had you used AT&T as your service provider paying $70 or $80 for the same service.

Yep, used Cricket for years, but now they are being bought out by AT&T and will be known as AIO. Will see if they still offer cheap plans. I've already been emailed that I will need a new phone within 8 months or so (different operating system). Not too pleased about that - bought a new Samsung phone for $230 last October at Cricket.

Does nextalarm incorporate a fire alarm? Mine are separate from ADT, but I'd like them combined. ADT gave me some crap about needing a permit to disable mine when I asked about combining them.

I didn't see it, but to replace your's with theirs should just be plug and play unless they came out and looked at them and told you that.

Here is why I appreciate my locked automatic gate with security code. My daughter texted me today to ask if I was expecting anyone because there was a man in a white SUV, parked in the drive outside my gate when she drove by.

Here's what I found rolled up in the gate when I got home. :))
