My dog is coughing and wheezing. This has been going on for a while. He's fine when he's just lying around, but when he gets too excited he starts coughing. It is more and more common now. I'm worried, but can't afford x-rays. I can take him to the vet to see what is going on, but I know they will want to take x-rays. I feel horrible right now, but I can't do what I can't do. Is there anything I can do to help him in the mean time?

I gave my dogs Children's Robitussin DM when they had kennel cough. It's perfectly safe. 1 teaspoon for every 20lbs. Also, take him into a steamed filled bathroom for a while. That will help.

Thank you. I ran to CVS and grabbed a bottle. Gave him a dose just now. How often should I do it?

I've been laid up with a miserable flu bug since Thursday. Fever, aches, horrible cough. Was I supposed to give up my Cubans? (Please say no.) :?

No, but make sure for each Cuban cigar you smoke you also have a shot of Cuban rum. Guaranteed you will feel better then. :)

Dave, if you knew my zero tolerance for alcohol....you'd know that Cuban rum would most likely put me in the grave. :)

Feeling better today, but still coughing some. Looking for the Mack Truck that ran me over. My doctor gave me a Z-pak to help with any secondary infection. That usually does the trick.

We had this trip planned for our children and grandchildren....all eleven of us....to the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine for Friday and Saturday nights. I got sick Thursday night; no way could I go. So I stayed behind to keep my germs away from everyone else. They sent me lots of pictures and video clips, but I missed it. :crying

They will all be home later this afternoon.

Hope your doggie is better, Engteach!

you can also give dogs Benedryl...in the tablets, 1/2 tablet for under 30 pounds every 12 hours.

Okay, I bought the cough syrup and gave it to him. He was okay with it, but refused to take it the next time. He would literally hold his breath and spit it out. Dumb smart dog. :) I finally got an idea...I put the medicine in my turkey baster (that I never use) and squirted it in his mouth to the back. He started coughing and they fell over on his side. I was so scared. I thought I choked him and he was dying. We all sat around him loving on him and trying to make sure he was breathing. Finally his breathing was raspy but better. I didn't sleep at all last night because I was afraid he was going to die, and it would be my fault. It turns out that by forcing him to drink the medicine I forced a seizure. He was better this morning, and is back to his old self (plus the coughing). Vet appointment is Thursday morning. I'll feel better when the vet tells me what to do.

Side note: when I told the secretary at the vet what happened she did a recap..."Flash is coughing, and owner is no longer allowed to administer medications." Way to make a girl feel bad, but I did laugh. I love my vet.

Sadly I took Flash to the vet today, and he did not come home. His throat was half way closed up, his heart was three times the size it should be, and his stomach was filled with cancer. All of this since I saw the vet six months ago. It was a hard call to make, but my vet said they could not treat the cancer, and could help the heart (maybe), but he would only live for about two more weeks and would be miserable the whole time. I just didn't expect to come home without my boy.

I know you made a hard decision. We had to put our cat to sleep Tuesday.
When I took him to the vet a few month ago we found out that he had diabetes. We can't afford the treatment, but he was still happy, so we took him home. He stopped eating this past weekend so we decided it was time. We had that cat for 14 years.
Hang in there and know that Flash is not hurting anymore.

4206What did we do before the Internet, including CTT? My cur dawg, a mix of brown Border Collie mama and apparently mostly Shepherd papa couldn't get up after our outing yesterday. Could not get up, even to go into her Dogloo or come into the house for the night. I finally put an old comforter on the patio, and she dragged herself onto it for the night. She weighs 75 lbs, so lifting her isn't an option.

She is up and around this morning, moving slowly, but using both back legs.

According to the Internet, she must have hip dysplasia. She had one episode like this before, and it also was after she was on a three or four-mile outing (I drive an ATV and the dogs run along).

So now I know, from the net, that she needs to lose about ten lbs and not to run on pavement. About 1/2 mile of the route is paved, so I'll just slow down there, once she recuperates. She's not going to be happy about the reduced rations, though. :(

And over the holiday, she has a vet appt, so I'll see if glucosamine might help.

grammar: dysplasia does NOT come in "episodes".....i'm not saying it's not dysplasia, just that dysplasia is not "episodic". from afar, it sounds more like arthritis or rheumatism....especially if she has any age on her to speak of......mac

Cute Puppy.

Larger Breeds are notorious for hip/knee/arthritis/rheumatism problem. Loosing weight helps, but you might think about springing for the special food from the vet. It's expensive, but cheaper then meds. Forgot what it's called but it's specifically for joints, about $80 for a big bag that lasts about one to one and a half months.

She is already scheduled to go in for a heart worm shot later this month, so I'll ask about the apparent joint problem.

I have read that large dogs like that - whether mixed breed or not - are usually very much crippled by 7 years of age.

Not really crippled. If you watch their weight and feed them joint supporting food they can live happily longer then that. It's just as it is in people. Overweight or big people have more joint problems then smaller people. It's because the joints have to support more.
