D-Day
On June 6, 1944, the Allies' amphibious invasion of northern France signaled the beginning of the end of World War II.
Facing fierce defense from the German army, forces from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and France landed in Normandy to take the beaches, giving them a foothold in Europe they would use to defeat Nazi Germany and end the war just more than a year later.
