They are called the 'Lady Bears' to DISTINGUISH them from the MEN'S basketball team, which is called the 'Bears'.
This is to help separate the two teams. "Did you go to the Bears game last night?" "Which Bears?"...

Since it appears that there is a need to differentiate the teams by their sex then it would seem to me to be appropriate to have them referred to as Sow Bears and Boar Bears. Unless, of course, you get away from the Bears altogether.
