State teachers group files grievance with local school district over COVID-19 risk

    I have a solution!

    https://www.kwtx.com/2020/09/15/stat...covid-19-risk/

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) ? The 68,000-member Texas State Teachers Association filed a grievance Tuesday with the Killeen ISD on behalf of members of the Killeen Educators Association who ?have been forced to work in unsafe conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic.?

?The safety of the students, the staff and the KISD community must come first,? Killeen Educators Association President Rick Beaule said.

?This isn?t about whether we want to work. We desperately want to teach our students to be the best they can be. This just can?t happen as we stand right now. Student cases have already begun to rise.?

The district declined to comment on the grievance Tuesday.

?It would be highly inappropriate for either party to discuss a grievance before the grievance process is adhered to, and has been fully exhausted, particularly in an effort to forge public opinion,? spokeswoman Tiana Maya said.

The district started virtual instruction on Aug. 17 and initially planned on resume on-campus instruction on Sept. 8, but on Aug. 25 Superintendent John Craft announced the start date had been moved up to Aug. 31 because of technology issues.

?We do not believe that this decision was made in the best interests of our members, employees or the students of Killeen Independent School District,? TSTA staff attorney Amanda Moore, wrote in a letter accompanying the grievance.

?We are concerned about the school district?s ability to adequately support and protect our members. Our members should not be required to work under unsafe working conditions.?

According to the grievance, the district has denied requests for more effective air filters; employees who interact most with children aren?t provided with face shields; not all employees are provided with cleaning supplies, and social distancing isn?t enforced effectively in cafeterias and physical education classes.

Educators want personal protection equipment for every employee on KISD campuses and a suspension of on-campus instruction.

The Killeen ISD?s online dashboard Tuesday showed 51 confirmed cases involving staff and five involving students since March 16. An active case involving a student was reported at Bellaire Elementary; an active case involving a staff member was reported at Hay Branch Elementary; one active case involving an employee was reported at Hay Branch Elementary; one active case involving an employee was reported at Pershing Park Elementary; an active case involving an employee was reported at Reeces Creek Elementary; an active case involving a student was reported at West Ward Elementary; an active case involving a student was reported at Venable Village Elementary; two active cases involving students were reported at Killeen High School, and one active case involving an employee at a non-campus facility was reported.

Isn't this teacher organization acting like a union? Seems like they are.

Wondering.........will KISD teachers walk off the job?

Despite what the association says this association is a union-lite.

They are shooting for hazardous duty pay, or more money of some sort. It isn't enough to get paid for giving classes from the house, but if they actually ever do come back to work, they want to make it worth their while. The teachers spokespeople are looking for more money.

I can’t see them shutting down. As far as any more pay, I would be surprised if that ever happened as any decision about pay is not negotiable at this time. I do think they will probably do better with the cleaning supplies. KISD does not like bad press so I can see them trying to do better on their safeguards.

Well, the TSTA has already filed a lawsuit against KISD. The official response is that it is inappropriate to discuss any grievances until the grievance process has played out.

KISD definitely does not like bad press. The lefties are now tossing the idea out there that the virus will not be effectively over until 2022, and perhaps may last as long as 10 years. I guess that means if Joe does, by some off chance win, he will get a pass when he fails to solve the worlds problems the day after the election.

I see a long period of buyers remorse coming up for Biden and the democrats, and I also don't think that teachers will be back into the classrooms with any real old time spirit until they can be guaranteed they will be safe 100%. I also remember saying that the first time one of the kiddos, or staff, came up positive for Covid, all bets were off. Seems that prediction is playing out.

No one is "giving classes from the house" and everyone is back to work.

I will say I am glad to be back and I am loving my class but the way the district is handling virtual learners has to change. There is not enough time in the day for me to do everything that is being asked of me unless I work till 7 or 8 each night and I refuse to do that!

I would say they have it even better than an union.....all the clout and seemingly authority and none of the obligations.......some call that the better part of 2 worlds...or havin' your cake and eatin' it too......mac

The "Killeen Education Association"? Who the heck are they? I remember back in the '80s when there was a "Killeen Classroom Teachers Association", or KCTA.
One of the upperclassmen at Ellison that I knew came up with a 'different' KCTA--the "Killeen Cat Torturers Association". Made Ms. Lucksinger's eyes roll to the back of her head after he told her he came up with it...

I am extremely thankful you are all back and teaching. Call me selfish, but I also hope this type of distraction doesn't close schools. Thank you for what you do, and I don't blame you for not wanting to work until 7 or 8 every night, you are person not a machine. I don't work until 7 or 8, either unless the money machine is running.

I'm all for teaching, as long as that is being done. I despise the "teachers" who think that it's their duty to indoctrinate our children with their personal, often socialist or globalist, opinions. Not that any persons in KISD are guilty of such a thing.
