My neurosurgeon is planning on cutting my throat and fusing my neck in a few weeks. He is a graduate of NC - I didn't say a word.
If he stopped at cutting your throat..... My wife has had two of those procedures and they worked wonders for her. They are much better than back surgery according to the wife. She has had 3 or 4 of those and her doc said if they have to go in again they will have to fuze her complete spinal column. Hope that never happens.

Thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Follow the docs orders.

    Thanks very much.

Same doc that did my back 11 years ago, and I did what he said (he said I was one of the few). I have to have a back fusion later on. But with a good surgeon, I guess it will be fine. My brother in law is a pussy who won't do his PT and wonders why he is not having good results on the same surgery I had. I warned him, but he is one who tends not to listen, and then complains. My sister hasn't shot him yet.

Good luck! In 2004, I had C5-C7 fused with very good results.

The problem now, as a result, the vertebrae above the fusion has done the work of the fused area and it is pushing into my spinal cord. If I get that fused, I'll likely not have much movement, so I am living with it. No, I'm not 100% disabled according to VA...lol

One tip I can think of. During recovery, you have to wear a neck brace. I was lucky and was able to get two of them so I could wash one daily. It really irritates the skin, so washing it, letting it dry and putting baby powder on the pads reduced the skin irritation.

About the only vertebrae I have heard cannot be dealt with successfully are the S1 L5 region... I had a bad C7 that was killing me and the injections fixed that one neatly. Later on, I had the S1 L5 go bad and I could barely walk. They did a series of steroid injections that did nothing, and finally did what is known as an RFA (Burnt a nerve out) and that relieved about 80% of the pain. After that they had me use a Tens unit and take meds to help with the other 20%... The Doc told me that there was no surgical way to fix my problem... Basically it was "suck it up and deal with it" issue at that point. Then they put the pain med I was using on the "very hard to get list" and made things even harder. My current doc is, thankfully, a former sports medicine practitioner and still prescribes the meds for me because he knows I do not abuse them and that the pain is real.

The steroid treatments do work most of the time, but they play hell with a diabetics sugar levels, and they will not do unlimited injections if there is no improvement. The reason I was given was that it is hard on diabetics and that repeated steroid injections lead to other issues later on.

Just asked my wife exactly what she had fused.

C5-7. This doesn't bother her at all.

L2-S1. This covers most of her lower back and now she cannot stand straight and uses a walker most of the time. Her docotor stated that the area above her fusion will eventually have to be fused or she will not be able to walk. Not a good situation for sure.

Wonder if the refs get a trophy for winning this tournament......what a waste of time, I should have known better. I guess it was Mike Holmgren that lamented when losing to the Steelers in the super bowl, "It's hard enough to play the Steelers, but playing the Steelers and Refs together, that's impossible".....

Thanks - everyone says it's much less painful than back surgery. I was driving the night of my back surgery (without permission) - I needed some Ben and Jerry's.
I had C3 and C4 fused. Might be less painful but don't know if it's safer. I had it done. The results were not good.

Tech fell short, but was a good game. Refs seemed to call a good game.

I had the disk at L5/S1and the lamina on the vertebra removed 11 years ago. No problems, except for the inevitable arthritis. I have 2 places on my neck and 3 on my back that need work. One day at a time. Funny think is, I have been to every specialist (bone) known to mankind, and my back started deteriorating in my 40s, with no explanation. I was a medical anomaly that got poked and prodded. I had the spine of an 85 year old at 45. The human body is amazing, but so complex. So much we still don't know about how things go wrong.
