    D-Day

On June 6, 1944, the Allies' amphibious invasion of northern France signaled the beginning of the end of World War II.

Facing fierce defense from the German army, forces from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and France landed in Normandy to take the beaches, giving them a foothold in Europe they would use to defeat Nazi Germany and end the war just more than a year later.

I always got a kick out of the German Beach Observer, that got on the phone screaming about all the troops coming in the movie The Longest Day.
