I don't see how Japanese beetles could survive the environment here. Dig down enough and it's still frozen. All the time. Called Permafrost.

    So, Ludwig

Do I need phosphorus or something else to balance the nitrogen burn?

It seems that the only curative is dilution with water and resodding. Of course that will not help much if you keep having the dogs relieve themselves in such copious quantities on the same spots. You may want to check with a local horticulturist about some more resistant grass species before you resod. (BTW: i am not a horticulturist)

It is not a nitrogen burn. I repeat - I am reasonably sure it is damage from grubs. They are larvae which turn into June bugs.
A good granular type of insecticide will handle it. Spread heavily where the damage is but also over your entire lawn. Water in good by frequent, deep watering but not so much you have run off.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

That has to be it!!!!! Snow mold or Snow Scald. That fits the conditions well.

    Thanks!

(We don't have June Bugs up here.)

And the dog urine can be an issue. It's very easy to just say not to let them pee there, but from November to April the area you can see will have multple feet of snow - often taller than the dogs. Then the pee stays in the snow until the snow is gone.

They walk 2.5+ miles a day in the summer (at least they were until I broke my tailbone - now it's more like barely a mile!) and according to post rules I pick up the poo and keep them on leashes that do not exceed six feet in length

I'll definitely be contacting the university and housing to see about (1) fixing this and (2) preventing it in the future.

I'll have to show you the front yard...

That's what I did last year. It's still 80% dead.
