I don't mind being called far right.
I have been right so far.

Yes, but it doesn't get dark enough to see them until almost midnight. The light is returning before AM. I think the sunrise time is near 5:45AM and the official sunset time is after 11:00. For me, the season is effectively over until next winter

I noticed the highs are above freezing. Can you believe you are looking for one of those?

So it appears that we broke Alaska.
In the Fairbanks area we have broken the record for most days at or about 85. It is considered a given that we will also break the at-or-above 80 record too making it THE hottest summer on record in the interior of Alaska.
but I saw this lovely flower on a hike this morning. Made me think of home.

Just a couple of notes.
Summer is almost over, and while that means you will be breaking out the winterwear, it also means you will have more opportunity to see the night sky again. I still get reports when Aurora Borealis (sometimes two days warning, sometimes "oops, it's here") is supposed to show up, if you want me to pass them along.
Have you seen any signs of a drawdown up there? There is talk that realignments will cause downsizing here, but I haven't seen any evidence of it actually beginning.

we had first frost last night. And the auroras were awesome at about 2AM according to one of the guys in the unit. I was asleep.
We are actually gaining some troops. I forget why. Up here it is mostly really young kids.* There's a lot of worry over taking the F-16s away from the air force base down the road, but then they want to move F-35s in there and the argument is why is the base good for one and no longer good for the other. It just smacks of cronyism and we have successfully fought it off.
*The gate guys in particular look 18 and 19. You should SEE the glare my husband tosses off when they ask for our daughter's ID and he responds "She's 14."
the younger wives are some of the least resilient women I have ever run into. God them them during deployments. Alaska has a philosophy of helping others but still expecting them to pull their own weight when they can. They aren't real tolerant of people who hide in their homes and complain about being bored in the dark months.
