    Dog Skin Allergies

It is that time of the year again where my dog (40lb terrier/heeler mix) suffers from pollen (oak I think) allergies. extremely itchy skin to the point where she is scratching herself bloody. I want to hold out on taking her to the vet for a steroid shot. What kind of non-presription treatment can I give her?

I would try Diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl). A 40 pound dog can take 2 of the 25mg capsules every 8 hours for control of allergic symptoms. The medication is safe and can be effective. Unfortunately, antihistamines are typically not as effective in dogs as they are in humans and if the symptoms persist you will probably have to see a veterinarian.

P.S. A medicated shampoo with aloe and oatmeal can help with itchy skin as well. You can pick that up from a veterinarian or find it at the pet store.

Good luck and I hope your pup feels better soon.
