Addressing the "Well Regulated" part of the equation

Rate this Entry
I considered, for some time, where to address this issue. I would have just opened a thread on it, but I expect the usual LEFTIST trolls would try to inject all sorts of flamebait, so I am starting it here.

For a militia to be security to a free state, it must be "well regulated,"
but just what does that mean?

Years ago I learned from someone that in the day the Constitution was written, it meant: properly equipped and trained. This seemed incomplete to me, but was all I had for several years. Recently I found a better explanation.

One of the best and most complete definitions I have found comes from the Constitution dot Org website
The phrase "well-regulated" was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. Establishing government oversight of the people's arms was not only not the intent in using the phrase in the 2nd amendment, it was precisely to render the government powerless to do so that the founders wrote it.
For a militia to be those things, and to be able to carry out its mission, it needs "bullets, beans and band-aids."
But it also needs training and discipline. The current militias have bullets, some beans, and a few band-aids. What
many of them currently lack is training and discipline.

Not too many years ago, the threats were far away, and the militias were actually more of a threat to themselves and their neighbors than anything else. Mostly just a bunch of good-ol-boys getting together to swap "fish that got away" stories once in a while.

This was written just a year ago, in the political section of USA Carry (gun rights) forum. It should be noted this forum is not like "Soldier of Fortune," but rather, is geared to the common man carrying common firearms.

The time is not right. I see this was your 4th post. Resolution of the tyrannical insanity permeating our government must be approached with non violent means, at the moment. If and when the tyrannical, out of control government turns to violence against its own citizens, then citizens will rise and a civil war will be ignited, and there will be nothing civil about it.
Military, LE, and other patriots will join us. Some will not. There are factions of government who are sick of the tyranny as well.
Again, non violent protest by millions of citizens is desired. Force is only a last resort, to save our lives when the monster has decided it's time to exterminate us, to fulfill its Marxist, socialist agenda of complete disarmament of our entire society.
This will not happen, unless the government wishes it so, and if it does, chaos and anarchy will be the order of the day.
The destruction of the United States of America has been done in plain sight. The government has ticked most of the boxes to achieve its goal for the New World Order already. The collapse of the U.S. dollar, or some other staged catastrophic event will light the fuse.
Pray that a war will not happen. The government is already prepared if one does. They've been practicing urban warfare for quite some time, and equipment is and has been moved to those areas that are expected to kindle very quickly.
Beware "Obama's Army" and alphabet soup agencies.
Dangerous times, indeed.

Volunteers would have to be trained which would require a lot of time, equipment and effort. Most civilians would have neither the time for, nor the inclination to participate in such training. It sounds good until one has to sweat a little!
Recently, the meetup for an "exchange of ideas" that occurred in Nevada highlighted the problems with some of the militia. A large portion of the volunteers were grouped into a camp, led by a guy named "Jerry" and so came to be known as "Jerry's Kids."
Not flattering, but they earned the name.

The following is a link to an after action review by an "outsider." The author is a long time 2d Amendment advocate, well schooled in the conduct of warfare.

The Cluster Coitus that results from lack of training and discipline
After Action Review From Sipsey Street
The posting is about 5 pages long (I have to hit pgdn 10 times), with the last page being lessons to be learned.

I still think the time is not right (though, with people like Obama and Ried in power, it gets closer), but the more important purposes of a strong and well regulated militia are to deter enemy aggression, rather than fight it in open warfare, and to deal with smaller threats, such as civil uprisings from outlaw gangs.

Should another confrontation with government thugs occur, it is imperative that we be coordinated and disciplined
to counter the fear and uncertainty of the situation, as well as any psy-ops the government throws at us.

The reactions to disinformation in this incident, as well as the related incident from the border patrol, speaks loudly of a high level of fear. Fear is a sign of lack of training and discipline. Those things are the undoing of a team confronted by a potentially lethal encounter with a well trained adversary.

Even in lesser conflicts, it is important to have training and the discipline to maintain orderly conduct while adhering to sane and well thought out rules of engagement.

Because the adherence to rules of engagement are so important in any contingency, I think the meeting in Nevada should be seriously studied to uncover and correct any weakness in the militias.

I am not the only one with this opinion.
One of the comments left on the Sipsey Street blog included this:
" As evidenced, very few of those responding are as "professional" as the Arizona Praetorian Guard
(something which, in my opinion, sorely needs to be addressed by the collective State Commanders,
in additon to inter/intra-state and national SOPs, etc.)."

In addition to the lack of discipline, exacerbated by fear of the unknown (are the federales going to attack us?) there were also problems with the supply chain. There is a posting about how the supply chain should work. Pretty elementary to those of us who worked in Logistics, but a lot of the easy stuff escapes those who haven't done it before, and too many of us who have done it forget that those who haven't don't know it.

In the area of logistics, I find it interesting to compare to what the Ukrainian Army was in need of this spring.

    http://news.kievukraine.info/2014/05...ine-spare.html
Ukraine in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Crimea, the list was more basic: boots, uniforms, body armor, and spare tires.
    ...
Ukraine’s military lacks the logistical equipment, functioning vehicles and trained soldiers to support expeditions for long periods of time away from their military bases.
    ...
Biden ... said the United States would be sending Kiev communications equipment, bomb detection gear, and other technology to root out infiltrators.
    ...
to its credit, has sent meals-ready-to-eat (MREs) and has committed to enhance military training
    ...
]Defense Department spokesperson Eileen Lainez said that the U.S. Embassy in Kiev has, for now, “purchased and delivered fuel pumps, concertina wire, vehicle batteries, spare tires, binoculars, and communications gear to the Ukrainian Border Guards.”

Along these same lines of "Well Regulated" Sipsey Street links to an article on the subject.
Which is a little surprising, as there is no love lost between most gun rights activists and Robert Farago, the owner of thetruthaboutguns blog.

Dutchman6's (Sipsey Street owner) uses this as an intro:
The Missouri Militia is run by grown-ups. Nobody is posing, flexing or fronting. Some are bearded, but I met no one seeking “the bubble reputation.” From the commanding officer Colonel S down to the the lowest squaddie, folks are grown-up about being a militia. People who have not been in a “disciplined” organization like the military or the Scouts may not fully appreciate what discipline in this context means. Discipline is power under control. Discipline is an answer to chaos. A culture of good discipline actually liberates the participants in that culture from the headaches and drama brought about by people thoughtlessly pursuing their own gripes and agendas.
The article is written by Tim McNabb, a regular contributor to the site.

As the Bundy incident unfolded, I checked the website of the Missouri Militia. I discovered that, by statute, I was already a member of the Missouri Militia being that I was an able-bodied citizen between the age of 18 and 64. I found the contact information for the local unit, the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Brigade of the Missouri Militia.

In my reading, research and discussion with folks on the topic, I learned that there are other groups that call themselves militias in Missouri. The 3/2 was an element of what I believe is the largest organized militia group in the Show-Me state. Using the contact information on the website, I got in touch with Major Y.
He goes on, for about 5 pages, describing in detail what a weekend training event with them is like.

The other groups that call themselves militias often are not.

By what measure do you decide who is called a militia, and who is not?
