We will be having our XXL dog spayed soon and we've been thinking about having gastropexy done at the same time. I would love to hear any opinions on the surgery. If we're going to have it done, it will be when she is spayed.

Is that like a stomach bypass for dogs?

Don't do it. I had gastric bypass, and it was rough, I can't imagine doing a surgery like that on a dog. She won't be able to let you know what she's lacking, and you will end up spending so much money to keep her healthy. Just put her on a diet and monitor her eating.

For Pedro's sakes, you've got to be kidding. Gastric bypass for dogs? How about feeding the dog properly?

Put the dog in my care for six months and pay me what you would for that procedure. You'll get back a healthy and properly proportioned dog who will be much happier, as will I and my accountant be. The dog accepts you naturally and does not have to be bribed with threats and food to do so.

Good gracious, I guess I should have checked back on here sooner. Cane is an XXL dog yes, 155 pound but very healthy and muscular. I can see why y'all were jumping down my throat, but she doesn't get people food, except with her meds. She also gets a lot of exercise. Canine Gastropexy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_gastropexy) is NOT gastric bypass. Gastropexy is a surgery that tacks the stomach to the side of the abdominal wall, this helps to prevent her stomach from twisting or flipping. She can still bloat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloat), but it will not be nearly as bad as torsion (stomach flipping) bloat. I hope I was able to clear that up some. I'm attaching a few pictures of Cane, so you can see what she looks like, and that she's not overweight.

She is a beautiful dog!

Thanks, I think so. I just felt I needed to clear up the confusion and show she's not a "fat" dog, but healthy.
