There are two counters on this board, and the one I look at says just over 217,000.

That means somewhere along the way, something like 16-17k messages are not accounted for.

Of course, part of the answer is that many things that aren't posts are counted by the counter I am looking at,

but it is much more fun (in a twisted sort of mindset) to think that the moderators have had to delete over 16k posts.

No, we have not been that delete happy. That would be a lot of messages deleted. The total from the message number includes not only messages that we have deleted, but messages that users have deleted along with messages in sections that we have deleted and messages in private sections that are not included in the forum statistics.
