Returning from the casino, where over half the cars in the parking garage have Texas plates, I wish once again Kinky had gotten more of a hearing for allowing the gaming vices into Texas. Somehow the lottery and bingo aren't as appealing. At least you can get grits in Louisiana that can be eaten with a fork (unlike Cracker Barrel's).

Observation: during the week, the casino looks like a gateway venue for a nursing home. Boomers in varying states of disrepair everywhere (present company included).

I have the same opinion of gaming as I have about drinking alcohol. If both disappeared from the planet tomorrow, my quality of life wouldn't be affected. My husband enjoys the tables and I go along for the change of scenery. However, both vices are legal in the US, and I would prefer for the funds to go to Texas.

Dang but you are a stickler. I'd be in favor of it for Texas, as clearly referenced in my preference to keep the money here. What's your position?

Love the casinos but HATE the toxic/filthy cigarette smoking in the slot area. Texas hold-em is a good place to relax and play lots of cards without losing your shirt. Black Jack is also located away from the chimneys.

Oh lord, I'd forgotten this thread. Funny stuff! We are in La. again, right now, and I still wish we had riverboat casinos in Texas. If we dredged out some bottom land enough to float one on the Nolan Creek, we could solve the flood issue, have some fun, and boost the economy.

We've been coming to the Horseshoe for at least 15 years, and it's gone downhill a little each time. Anyone have reviews on the other casinos?

wow....i'm kind of sad to hear that, but then i s'pose i'd rather find out now instead of when i get there. that's too bad. we haven't been there in prob'ly 10 years now but had noticed the same thing you have even back then. still gettin' thread bare and worn, huh? how's the quality of patrons look......upstanding or........not so upstanding?.....mac

The patrons? Mostly scruffy. I realize almost no one dresses up, but my husband is the only non-employee in a sport coat. We decided to watch the playoff game tonight anyway. Play later, maybe.

At least it isn't making tornados there like it did when we went through a few weeks ago.

Now we're planning a trip to the river walk in San Antonio and looking for advice on a good hotel on the river.

There is a huge casino off of 35 as you cross into OK. that I want to visit sometime.

It looks very nice! I just hate Las Vegas for the smog and climate, not to mention I don't like air travel. Driving to Shreveport isn't bad, and the climate is just like home. They've always comped our room at the Horseshoe, but we are about worn out with the decline in amenities. This may be our last stay there. The Winstar is about an hour closer, depending on getting through the Metroplex.

I haven't stayed in SA in 10 years, ST.

Why would you go through the Metroplex? About 100 miles out of the way.

You have to take 35 through Fort Worth to get there.

Not if you are going to Shreveport/Bossier. The best way to to cut through to Tyler then hit the interstate East to LA.

Your right. Grammars comment about being an hour closer was in reference to going to Winstar instead of Shreveport.

When we went to Fla., my GPS took us to 105 outside of Brian, and then southeast to Beaumont. It was the shortest route to the border, but it was a monumental pain because it was 2 lane all the way, and had frequent stops in small towns on the way. We were lucky to get up to 55 this route. With my wife, going to Houston to hit I10 was out of the question.

On the trip home, it took us from I10, up to Tx. Hwy 7 and then straight west from Crockett to Eddy and then I35. It was a lot faster, as Tx 7 has few small towns to slow you down, and it is fairly well maintained. We could do 70 almost the whole way on 7.

Winstar Casino. Drive into the parking lot and you will see that about 90% of the cars and buses have TX license plates. lol

When my daughter was going to Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK I used to take US 281 north out of Lampasas. The highway runs right to the front door of the school. But it also passes through many small towns in OK, and most of them have a small casino. Coming back one time I decided to stop at a couple of them. Nice little places, didn't win much but didn't lose my butt either. :)

This one is a bit out of the way but you should try Inn of the Mountain Gods in NM...it's about 1.5 hours outside of El Paso: http://innofthemountaingods.com/

Or

Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino right outside of El Paso:

Same thing in the Louisiana casinos. I'd like to keep the money they generate in Texas, but that's unlikely.

Just now saw this thread..been off for a while...but, ....we go to Bossier/Shreveport about once every month or six weeks....and love it. It is a great get a way for us, and we really enjoy it....We used to go to Vegas fairly often..but, the flights, cost, trouble, and cookie cutter casinos in Vegas, along with the prices...convinced us it was much better to go to Bossier/Shreveport.............As has been said here, it seems crazy that we in Texas have a cash problem, and will not allow casino gambling. Absolutely crazy....we promote the lotto...suck up the revenue from alcohol, happily.... ....Of course, we are going to deprive smokers of a private place in a restaurant to smoke, hurting private enterprise, and depriving people of choice and individual liberties,...while legalizing alcohol, knowing it's dangers...but,...sorry, getting off track here.... Shreveport would have dried up if not for gambling...the revenue, jobs, commerce, tourism, taxes have saved Shreveport/Bossier...and other parts of Louisiana. Why not Texas?.....What is the reasoning?...Why don't we allow it? ....It is absolutely stupid to me that we don't allow it now.... BTW, the Eldorado in Shreveport, on the river, is the absolute best . The Horsehoe looks glamorous from the outside, but, no comparison in casionos, rooms, or dining..........The people at the Eldorado are very, very nice...their customer service is the BEST we have ever had...we get free comps,.... from rooms, which are first class, buffets (which are much better and cheaper than Vegas buffets), dinners at their really nice Vintage restaurant, chips, gifts...and, yes, we have managed to win every time we have gone except twice....Everyone is super nice from the check in ladies, to the housekeepers, drink girls, wait staff....it is a first class, four star operation...and we appreciate the way they treat us.....You should try them...you will be glad you did..

I am naive enough to believe that the Nevada Gaming Commission does the better job of keeping the games honest because of their experience in the business. I distrust all those houses run by Native Americans.
