View Full Version : Words Added to profanity Filter

Rick
February 2nd, 2012, 7:46 AM
Someone suggested that in order to save myself some frustration, I should add a few of the "clever" but juvenile words to the profanity filter.

So I did and when the system ran the maintenance at 2:00 am, it seems to have blocked those words as well.

I hope you didn't add "sack of used groceries".

"Rule 4: Swearing (bypassing the curse word filter), pornography, offensive text, adult content, or otherwise inappropriate (as deemed by Staff) material or discussion is not permitted." (Rick on "Mitt" thread under national news and politics)

I have a question in relation to the rule. Not that I have or even have a desire to use either term on CTT, but what's the difference between the following two euphemisms: "dip####z" and "####"? (substitute one different consonant)

I mean, other than the first one being used by a liberal woman once on the forum, and the second being used in 26 different threads by people who are not a liberal woman? The first euphemism is spelled a little fancier. Oh, and one other difference: reprimand for the first and no reprimands for the other 26 uses.

Rick
February 3rd, 2012, 7:36 PM
I haven't seen the use of #### and when I searched for it just now, the only reference to it came up in this thread, used by you. I'll gladly add anything profane that offends you to the filter.

You seem to be implying that I am not being fair. Ok, I admit, I handle some people differently. When I delete a message from a new member or someone I haven't had to delete much in the past, I often send them a Private Message explaining why. There are several here who just have their messages deleted, I don't bother to explain it and you know what, they don't complain. They just move on to the next thing.

In the post that has you so worked up, I quoted corgifan's bypassing of the filter and admonished dawglover for the same. No one was "punished" for it, it wasn't that big of a deal, I was just trying to get a handle on it. If that's not fair, then so be it. I received a few PM's since either thanking me or telling me that I handled it just fine. By the way, in the past, I have made the same statement about bypassing the filter to cityboy. I'm pretty sure he isn't a liberal woman.

You seem to be obsessing over the issue for three days now. Is this really that important to your life?

I tend to obsess over fairness. And you know as well as I do the word that was used with impunity in 26 threads was s. h. y. t. I don't find it offensive. I was raised by an alcoholic father who used his WWII navy vocabulary no matter who was around, so it's a little hard to offend me with strong language.

But yeah, the Tea Party types, birthers, or angry guys here can say virtually anything, but just let a liberal or moderate speak up, and there's a slam.

Rick

Keep in mind, I could have edited or deleted that post and not said a word. But I wanted to solve the problem and keeping it to myself would not have solved the problem.

I guess I should have gone through all 26 topics containing 201 pages with over 2,000 messages like you apparently did and then list everybody in the admonishment. Had I done that, would you still be obsessing over the message?

How about this? I'll allow you access to read deleted messages and give you the next 24 hours to take a look for yourself and see who is being deleted the most on this "unfair" forum.

Trust me, you will be shocked at your findings.

Maybe I'll let everyone have access and then everyone will see that you are completely off base with your claim.

Here's a thought. if we all post our opinions, criticisms, views, slams, et al, without cussing or pseudo-cussing, it will become a non-issue. I'm not trying to be a Pollyanna, but really.... what's the point?

Besides....I hear enough of that all day at school. And sometimes, it's even the kids who do it. :)

This entire thread is cussing. Put a damn star or pound sign in the place of the word? Makes no difference...the "thought" of the word passed through my mind same as reading it all spelled out would have....

What the #### does it matter? (see my point?)

As for the rest, Rick I love ya, love the forum, duh...but I totally agree with what GR is trying to get across. Intentional or not, I absolutely see what she is saying and have to agree. Call it a double standard or whatever, but it does exist. Not blaming you or anyone...but it does.

And I don't think she read over 2,000 posts, she did a simple search.

Good grief, even I'm not that obsessive. I just put the euphemism into the search bar, and in .07 seconds, 26 threads popped up. I didn't need to read them (or want to). Besides, I agree with bbh that cursing is not even necessary. Most of us are enough well-versed in the language of repartee that it's not needed.

Did you read the post that she is obsessing over? I called out someone on "both" sides. How can I be more fair? That was it, I was trying to get a handle on soemthing that I didn't like.

Then how would she know who said what? How would she know that it was a tea party member or whatever?

This is getting tedious. I'd like to say I'm sorry I complained, but of course I'm not.

Rick, it's like a parent who berates a child in public, and says, oh yeah, your brother did the same thing yesterday, and that was wrong too. That was the exact context. You red-carded one member, and said another member had done the same thing.

And I read enough of the thread to know nearly everyone here is far right, and proud of it. And that's fine. If I want to read liberal humor and opinion, I can find that elsewhere. :p

Rick
February 3rd, 2012, 9:57 PM
Define "red-carded".

Are you going to take me up on the offer to see the deletions? That's the only way to see the truth about who is being moderated.

Red-card=penalty for egregious soccer violation.

And no, what you do in the privacy of delete-realm, stays in the privacy of delete-realm. Thanks anyway. I'll take your word for it.

Maybe it's a girl thing...we tend to see more clearly. It's ok...

Rick
February 3rd, 2012, 10:27 PM
Had there been an egregious violation, you would have seen it handled differently. We typically don't have egregious violations BECAUSE we have standards.

No one was penalized, no one was going to be penalized.

The deleted messages were posted in public. I don't have anything to hide about how I moderate.

Scarlett
February 3rd, 2012, 10:30 PM
I think, perhaps, you might be missing the point. Next time we have lunch, I'll try to explain. It's getting lost in translation.
