The first time I had my wife look through the telescope at the moon, I got her going by telling her I could see the flag that the Lunar explorers planted. She must have squinted for 10 minutes before I let her in on the joke. :))

This may coincide with the beginning of the eclipse.
2017 I was about 30 minutes south of the center line, where there was the maximum duration of totality. That meant I saw ~10 seconds less of totality.
Close enough for me. It was still more than 2 minutes.
